Our first Professional Development
Event was a talk by artist, Eric Butcher on Monday 19th March 2007 at
Missenden Abbey, Great Missenden, Bucks at 7.00pm.
Born in Singapore, Eric Butcher moved to England in 1974. Through studying
fine art, a fascination with the problems of aesthetics developed which
eventually took him to Cambridge University where he read philosophy. Since
graduating from Corpus Christi College in 1994 he has exhibited extensively in
the UK with solo shows in London, Cambridge and Liverpool; and internationally
with shows in Germany, Italy, Australia and the USA. In 2001 he completed an MA
in Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art for which he received an Arts and
Humanities Research Board Scholarship. In addition he has received awards and
research grants from The Arts Council, England, Wimbledon School of Art and the
Art Institute at Bournemouth.
Eric's artistic approach is largely determined by the physical process of
production, the outcome is a body of work which is, on one level, about the
very act of painting and the physicality of the materials. The source of his
engagement with painting is a fascination with its physical presence, they
are objects rather than pictures. His choice of tools and materials and
decisions regarding size and depth or the display of a piece being as
consequential for him as the actual painted surface.
Eric is a widely respected artist and exhibits both nationally and
internationally.
Initial feedback from attendees showed this to be an extremely successful event. Eric's talk was informative,
entertaining and offered a wealth of experience from which we were all able to benefit.
